Bike Adirondacks

NE Quadrant

The northeast portion of the Adirondack Park is one of the more diverse areas of the park, characterized by the High Peaks, Dix Mountain, and Giant Mountain Wilderness Areas, and a section of rolling farmland along Lake Champlain. The Boquet, Ausable, and Saranac Rivers flow from the mountains down to Lake Champlain, providing a number of scenic on road biking opportunities. Two of the larger communities in the Adirondack Park, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, anchor the mountainous portion of this area and share five bicycle shops between them. Rides in this area range from the Bloomingdale Bog Trail, a rails to trails pathway, to the Hays Brook Trail System near Paul Smiths, to a new set of more challenging trails under development near Wilmington and Whiteface Mountain.

Population centers in Canada in closest proximity to the NE Adirondacks include Ottawa and Brockville in Ontario, and Montreal in Quebec; nearby NY State communities include Plattsburgh and Malone; nearby and linked by ferry service or bridges is Burlington and northern Vermont. To reach this part of the Adirondack Park: use NY Route 30 from Malone; from Montreal, take I 87 south from the Quebec border to Plattsburgh and NY Route 3; from Plattsburgh, take NY Route 3 west or use I 87 Adirondack Park exits; from Burlington and northern Vermont, take the Grand Isle ferry, which operates year round, to reach Plattsburgh.
