The northwest portion of the Adirondack Park is characterized by rolling countryside, northwesterly flowing rivers, and uncrowded trails and waterways. That lakes and rivers are abundant is evident in the names of the main communities of the area, such as Tupper Lake, Star Lake, and Cranberry Lake. Scenic roads winding through a forested wilderness link the small communities where you will find a warm welcome. Routes in this area include the Massawepie Road from Horseshoe Lake, the Santa Clara Tract, and more challenging trail rides near Upper Saranac Lake such as the Deer Pond and Floodwood Pond Loops.
Population centers in Ontario in closest proximity to the NW Adirondacks include Ottawa, Brockville, and Kingston; nearby NY State communities include Watertown, Canton, Potsdam, Ogdensburg, Massena, and Malone. To reach this part of the Adirondack Park: use I-81 and NY Route 3 from Watertown and Kingston, Ontario; use NY Routes 37 and 30 from Massena and Malone; and, use NY Route 56 from Potsdam.
