The southwest portion of the Adirondack Park features a series of lake communities along Route 28, including Blue Mountain Lake, Raquette Lake, Inlet, Eagle Bay, and Old Forge. Along Routes 30 and 8 in the central part of the park are Speculator, Lake Pleasant, and Piseco, while Caroga Lake and Canada Lake are further to the south. While numerous lakes and streams are characteristic of the entire Adirondack Park, this portion of the Park has an even greater share of water and almost every mountain bike ride features views of lakes and streams. From the easier Vista Trail near Eagle Bay, to rides along the Sabattis and Lake Lila Roads, to longer rides out on the Moose River plains, there are a variety of rides that all feature water.
Gloversville, Johnstown, Amsterdam, Lowville, Boonville, Utica, Rome, and Syracuse are all population centers in close proximity to the SW Adirondacks, with Oneonta, Binghamton, Ithaca, Rochester, and Buffalo located a little further south and west. To reach this part of the Adirondack Park: use the New York Thruway and I 81 to reach any of the communities listed; from the Thruway, use NY Routes 30, 10, and 28 North.
